Bonding can change your smile for the better

dental bondingMinor dental repairs have never been easier, or more attractive, than they can be with a process called “bonding.” If you have a chipped, broken or stained tooth, dental bonding can make it look practically new again. And bonding is a relatively inexpensive way to make those repairs.

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure

Here’s how it works:

  • The dentist applies tooth-colored composite material to your tooth
  • The material is sculpted into shape
  • It’s hardened with blue light
  • And finally, it’s polished

It’s called bonding because the material bonds to your tooth

The process is ideal for minor cosmetic dentistry repairs, such as:

  • Fixing a broken tooth
  • Fixing a chipped tooth
  • Fixing a discolored tooth
  • Closing small gaps between teeth
  • Reshaping and recontouring teeth
  • Filling small cavities
  • Replacing or masking silver amalgam fillings

Bonding is a popular an effective treatment because…

Dental bonding procedures typically only require one office visit, with the entire process taking about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth. Unless your bonding treatment is part of repairing a cavity — for the purpose of filling a decayed tooth, numbing in usually not necessary. Bonding also requires the least amount of enamel removal, as compared to other cosmetic repairs, such as veneers and crowns.

Bonding material can be sensitive

Unlike crowns and porcelain veneers, dental bonding material can become discolored over time. As with natural teeth, coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco can stain the bonding material, which can cause it to no longer match the rest of the tooth. We warn our patients to completely avoid these substances for 24 to 48 hours after bonding a bonding procedure.  And bonding, which is porous, may simply not be a good choice for smokers.

In addition, dental bonding isn’t as strong and durable as veneers and crowns and can chip easily. With proper care, however, dental bonding can last up to 10 years.

Bonding isn’t right in every situation, but it could be right for you
