If you have missing teeth, it is crucial to replace them. Without all your teeth, chewing and eating can destabilize your bite and cause you discomfort. When teeth are missing, your mouth can shift and even cause your face to look older. Implants are a great way to replace your missing teeth. We invite you to contact our Grayslake practice to discuss your options regarding dental implants with Dr. Rey Martinez. Our expert staff looks forward to meeting you!

WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Dental implants are an appliance that replaces the root of a tooth. Implants provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to act the same as your natural teeth. Compared to bridges, dental implants offer many benefits, such as:

  • Comfort
  • Better smile aesthetics
  • Easier to eat and clean
  • More durable

HOW DO DENTAL IMPLANTS WORK?

Dental implants have three components:

  • A fixture that is implanted into the bone
  • An abutment that works as a mount for the crown
  • The crown

An implant is a new tooth made of steel and porcelain that looks just like your natural tooth. Your implant is composed of two parts that mimic a tooth’s root and crown. The implant’s “root” is a titanium steel rod placed into the jaw bone to act as a root. Once the rod is in place, a porcelain crown is attached to replace the top part of your tooth.

Implants may also be used to anchor dentures, especially lower dentures that tend to shift when you talk or chew. Plus, for patients with removable partial dentures, implants can replace missing teeth so that you have a more natural-looking smile.

Success rates of dental implants vary, depending on where in the jaw the implants are placed but, in general, dental implants have a success rate of up to 98%. With proper care, and implants can last a lifetime.

Are Dental Implants Painful?

The process for dental implants can take up to one year. Patient discomfort is minimal and easily managed with non-prescription or prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). The step in which most patients experience discomfort is when the fixture is placed in the jaw bone. The discomfort typically lasts one week or less. After the implant is completely healed, the appliance does not cause any discomfort.

Are They Safe?

Dental implants are made of titanium and other materials that are commonly used in dental and medical procedures. The materials are very safe for these applications.

Does Insurance Cover Dental Implants?

Some insurances cover a portion of the cost for dental implants. We recommend that you verify coverage prior to having the procedure. You may be responsible for a co-payment, deductible, co-insurance or the entire cost of the procedure.
