Dental implants explained
Dental implants are a primary solution for patients who are missing one or more teeth. These restorations are made of titanium metal and are placed during oral surgery into the bone of the mouth, specifically the upper or lower jaw. They are then restored over the top with specific restorations such as:
Dental implants are the standard in tooth replacement and can be a wonderful option for patients seeking permanency with a no-fuss solution.
Placement of dental implants
After patients have visited with the staff at Advanced Dental Arts and have been determined to be appropriate candidates for implants, a series of x-rays are performed so the dentist can prepare for the placement of these restorations. It is important to make note of sinus cavities which can affect placement. Oral surgery is performed with proper anesthetics and sedation, during which the dentist creates a hole in the jaw bone for the implant to be placed. The gum tissue is sutured, and the area allowed to heal over the course of several weeks, sometimes months. This allows osseointegration to occur—the growth of bone to solidify the dental implant in place. Afterwards, the implant is restored depending on the needs of the patient. A single tooth may be achieved by placing a dental crown over the abutment of the dental implant, while several teeth may be replaced by using the dental implant to support a dental bridge or a full denture.
