Have you Seen your Dentist This Year?

Dental Care Grayslake, ILWe are continually reminded that we need to see our dentist for checkups and cleanings twice each year. Seeing that we have passed the halfway point of 2017, now is a good time for yet another reminder. If you haven’t seen your dentist yet this year, now is a great time to schedule a visit. Not only are we at the tail end of summer, but we are quickly approaching the busy holiday season, during which it is difficult to get much of anything done for oneself.

Why is this so important?

Why is it that your Grayslake dentist wants to see you every six months? We have several good reasons. Ultimately, we love helping our patients maintain healthy teeth. We also enjoy assisting them with their cosmetic and functional concerns. At the core of routine dental care, though, is a commitment to disease prevention. During your regular checkups and cleanings, quite a lot is accomplished, including:

  • Oral cancer screening. Indicators of oral cancer can be somewhat subtle during early stages when treatment can be most successful. Your dentist has the high-level training to recognize warning signs through a comprehensive observation of soft tissue.
  • A check on habits. Some of the ways that we inadvertently damage our teeth are through bad habits. For some, it is using tobacco products; for others, it is the nighttime habit of clenching and grinding teeth (bruxism). The list goes on. Through routine observation, it is possible to become aware of the dangers of bad habits and to mitigate those dangers with appropriate care.
  • Digging deeper. You might be able to notice signs of gum disease and may even recognize that you could be getting a cavity. What you can’t see without the help of your dentist is what is happening below the surface. X-rays are a routine part of dental checkups because this imaging informs us of potential problems such as infection in a root canal, or bone loss due to periodontal disease.

And you thought dental visits were all about cavities and gum disease! In our ideal world, all of our patients would hear only the best news during routine checkups and cleanings. By maintaining those six-month visits, this becomes a real possibility for you.
